Stop by and join our show, El Jardin, for May’s Santa Cruz First Friday Art Tour. We’ll be celebrating the beautiful artwork by UCSC student Enrique Lopez, 6-9pm Friday, May 4th.
The show, El Jardín, is comprised of three bodies of work. The first of these are mixed media paintings, the second are flower prints, and the third are bee imagery prints.
The mixed media paintings were designed as gifts for friends of Lopez. These pieces were mainly a study of color to create the right combinations that would compliment each other. The overall imagery does not change, only the backgrounds.
The second component, Stems and Styles, is the most important. When Lopez first thought of this series, there were many things he wanted to accomplish. The most important thing was to create a brand new, fully developed body of work. Accuracy was another important consideration. This meant getting the silhouettes and colors of the flowers he chose to be as accurate as possible. His other goal was to fuse three forms of printmaking—relief, lithography, and stenciling. Getting these mediums to work cohesively was crucial for the success of this series. Certain elements lent themselves to certain mediums, allowing for what you see today.
The third series in El Jardín are the prints with bee imagery. This is still in a very premature state, but still contain everything that Lopez learned from the Stems and Styles series.
All this imagery is an attempt to remind us of our natural surroundings. Whether it’s through shapes, color, or something else altogether, take time to appreciate El Jardín.
